My top tip for travelling to Antarctica? If you try to be the last one on the zodiacs during cruising excursions, it can pay off. Generally you'll be in the boat with fewer people, meaning a quieter experience and more chances to interact with the knowledgeable guides.

My top 5 Antarctic experiences
- Landing in Punta Arenas ahead of my first trip to Antarctica and enjoying daylight till 11pm.
- Being the first person to spot three orcas swimming in the distance. At first I thought they were penguins, then I saw the distinctive white eye patches and got chills!
- Heading out on deck in the middle of the night to take in a different side of Antarctica. Ice was floating serenely in the deep blue water and I could hear penguins calling out
- Hearing an earthquake-like noise and turning to see the enormous back of a whale rising out of the water
- Laughing at the spectacle of penguins waddling around, falling over and interacting with each other
