Tell us about Zodiac excursions
Enjoyed the ones they had on but quite a few of the Zodiac excursions (4 out of 13) were canceled because the water was just a bit choppy (not very choppy) and they were worried about people's ability (& safety) to get on and off the Zodiac's! They need to design a better way to load and unload people onto those so that they don't have to cancel them when conditions aren't too bad. Also, they didn't have enough Zodiac drivers and so they wouldn't use all their Zodiac's!!!
Tell us about the Ortelius
I choose Ortelius because I thought that going with a smaller ship will mean that all can go onshore at the same time. But, since they had 117 passengers and only 100 are allowed to go onshore at one time, we still had to wait around and take turns. Or, choose between decent length Zodiac cruise or sufficient time onshore. So, I could have as well choosen a bigger, newer cruise ship and had more things to do on the ship and more amenities on board (since Ortelius is a very basic ship).
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Go earlier in the season so that everything is still fully snow covered and you get the real feel of Antarctica. In December, lot of the landing sites didn't have any snow on the ground and were just dirt and so it didn't look all white and wintery!
