Tell us about the expedition team

First class, professionals. Always enthusiastic. High energy. Solid, fun folks.

Tell us about the Hebridean Sky

Expectations: very nice ship. Our cabin was perfectly homey and comfortable. Food was great, they worked hard to make vegan meals for me. That said, some just too spicy! But all soups were fantastic! My John ate desserts at every meal. They were obviously delicious. Dining room was nicely arranged. We shared many wonderful meals with many folks. The ship’s crew was just as professional and accommodating as the expedition team.

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Always felt safe. Always knew a competent person was at the helm. I think one highlight was watching nature at work with a leopard seal catching a gentoo penguin. But scenery at all times was beautiful. We had much sun and warm weather mixed with some gray skies and precipitation. We had incredible whale viewings, sometimes so many at once it was hard to keep track, and of course they were the most awesome. But I would include penguin rookeries, slowly passing sleeping leopard seals on ice floes, passing a gymumbo iceberg in Lemaire Channel, the avalanche we watched as we went back through the same channel, the bergie bits and growlers were everywhere, the polar plunge was hilarious and it still didn’t inspire me to jump in (whew!), and the Drake Passage gave us a taste of stormy (mild-ish) seas outbound and a welcome calm inbound crossing. Yes, highly recommend this trip, this group of folks who led it, who worked it, you folks, and for sure, the passengers who were 99.9 percent the best!!!

Tell us about the wildlife

Happily, I was not there for a photographic trip. Many were. With large (I mean, very large) cameras and (amateur photographers) in a crowded zodiac, it was a few times distracting. However, I truly enjoyed all excursions, people, sites and experiences; and have fine photos for remembrances. Whales, whales, whales: Best experiences in zodiacs!

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Bring good binoculars for broad landscapes. Small (even very good small) binocs do not do justice for viewing birds from the ship and zodiacs, or long distance viewing.
