Were Swoop right to recommend Aurora Expeditions?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Fantastic experience - really well worth the money. Appreciated how organised the whole activity was and yet the flexibility of the team to respond to changing conditions. We got every opportunity to kayak once safe to do so and it was a real highlight of the trip - provided a great opportunity to explore the Antarctic in more depth than just zodiac landings.

Tell us about the expedition team

The entire expedition team was great - they seemed to have good camaraderie and their enthusiasm for the Antarctic and its wildlife was infectious. Every member was knowledgeable in their own way and were really friendly. Given I participated in the kayaking program, I encountered the kayaking expedition team more than some of the other team members. Ably led by Eamon, they were each great - very helpful and engaging. Special thanks to Tim Vanhoutteghem - really appreciated his excellent spirits and great skill leading us on great kayaking experiences. I also enjoyed the lectures provided by the team, particularly by Kelsey Camacho on the Belgica. I would have enjoyed hearing more historical lectures like this from her. She was also really giving of her time and helpful in answering other travel-related questions.

Tell us about the Sylvia Earle

The ship was great - common areas and our suite were without fault. The food was good - quality was always good. Variety could have been slightly more extensive. Appreciated the quality of wine available/that was included with our package.

Tell us about the Kayaking

Amazing! As I said previously, u think it was the best way to experience the Antarctic. I would definitely recommend it - good to have a fair amount of experience but it isn’t in any way intimidating. The team do a good job making sure you’re safe and comfortable.

Tell us about Buenos Aires

Having been to BA before, it was great to go back and visit it once again. There is great history and architecture to learn about and of course amazing food and wine available! Highly recommend a bike tour as a good way to explore the city.

Tell us about Ushuaia

It would have been interesting to have had a tour of the city / learned of its history rather than doing a cruise of Beagle Channel. The Hayas was a great hotel - beautiful setting and food / drinks were superb (room was slightly dated).

Tell us about Punta Arenas

Due to delay in leaving Antarctic, we didn’t get to spend much time here which was a shame and I can’t offer much feedback on it. I did not enjoy staying at the Dreams hotel - the air conditioning in the room didn’t work and breakfast buffet was poor.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

If you don’t know much about this type of trip I think it is definitely worth engaging a travel agent like Swoop to draw on their expertise.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

No.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

I really appreciated the initial contacts up to booking with Tennessee who was super helpful and really knowledgeable. Once we booked, communication could have been better and we sometimes found email exchanges frustrating.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

I felt both excited and well-prepared for the trip. We largely followed the recommendations from Swoop and Aurora in terms of itineraries and packing.

No
