There were lots of memorable moments, that's for sure: First sightings of Antarctica, penguins, whales and seals were four of them. The Polar Plunge, I was the second one in, was another. Many of my fellow travelers followed me in. (Damn that water was cold, could not do the swimming I had imagined.) Might sound funny, but as a vegetarian, the vegetarian aspect of all meals was very memorable for me. I became a vegetarian about 40 years ago, but never have I had such delicious and fantastic vegetarian food available to me, buffet style, for two whole weeks. It was wonderful. So many other memorable moments, but my most memorable will always be standing atop that very high hill that we mountaineered up as team of six, plus our intrepid expedition leader, all connected to the same rope. We saw a fantastic avalanche from up on that hill, what a mighty wave it created in the ocean far below as it crashed down the side of that mountain. It was a physical challenge for me to do the climb, I was not sure that, at the age of 68, I could make it, but with the adrenalin that flowed through me and the encouragement of my team, I did it!

When a gentle 50 foot right whale surfaced beside our zodiac group, spending 15 minutes or so within just a few inches of one of the boats, clearly intrigued its human occupants. Words fail me.

It was all great. Probably seeing Smith Island at midnight on way home was particularly surreal. Glacier Sur Trip at El Calafate was particularly special and very well executed.

The entire trip was one great moment. It was everything I expected and more probably the one moment is the realization that animals in Antarctica are not afraid of people because we are not a threat to them. I have previously seen that only in the Galapagos.

During my kayaking session, we had a whale encounter where a humpback whale dove just in front of our kayak and swam underneath us. I can't describe how amazing that was to see such an incredible animal in the wild and that close to me.

There was not a most memorable moment. I have hiked, backpacked, and mountain climbed throughout my life and seen and experienced a lot. There are always fanatic experiences that are unimagined and unexpected prior to a trip. We did not know what to expect or anticipate on our own in Chile (Torres del Paine / Patagonia) or especially in Antarctica over the three weeks we were there, six of those days on the exploration vessel Ocean Nova. Especially in Antarctica there were surprises at every turn that resulted in fantastic experiences. As a geologist I think I liked the hiking the active volcano, hiking over the ice and snow fields up to higher elevations to get good overviews of the ice fields, glaciers, and mountainous terrain. Also the Zodiac trips that repeatedly resulted in close encounters with whales, boating among the floating ice and icebergs, and close up look at the geologic structures visible by Zodiac. Because there were not relatively many people on the vessel, we enjoyed the close comradery that we experienced. There was no one else on Antarctica that we saw in our little part of the continent besides Ocean Nova people which gave a feeling of the vastness and remotness of were we were which was a great and unequaled experience.
