Operator's Itinerary

Day 1: Afternoon visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park by 4x4

Arrive this morning into Ushuaia and meet your local Swoop guide who will take you to your hotel (please note: hotel check-in times may vary). During the afternoon, you will have your first introduction to the nature of Tierra del Fuego, by visiting the National Park, located just 20 minutes from the city. You will be driven by your guide in a very cool 4x4 vehicle, with a maximum group size of 6 for a more intimate experience in this very popular protected area.

We provide a different approach to the park so as to avoid the big bus groups also visiting. Most guests are leaving when we enter the park and your guide will show you the region’s highlights away from most of the crowds. We make several stops to hike (approx total: 2 hours), over easy terrain, and there's lots of park highlights to view from the vehicle. This is the part of the world that first inspired Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and we know it will inspire you too.

Returning to your hotel, you will have the opportunity to try one of Ushuaia’s many superb restaurants. Try the seafood, but save yourself for king crab - which you will try in a very special setting tomorrow.

Accommodation: Not included; can be added if required.

Day 2: Crab fishing & gourmet lunch

We depart after breakfast and drive eastwards through the magical southern Patagonian forest, once more in your 4x4 vehicle with no more than 5 other travellers, plus your guide.

First an interpretative walk in the forest will give you a chance to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of this secluded location for around 2 hours. Later, we arrive at a tiny rustic fishing village on the coast of the Beagle Channel. This is where the Andes meet the ocean and is a truly photogenic place. You will also see the well-known arboles bandera, or flag-trees, whose slanted-growth is testament to the harsh winds that whip these shores!

Upon arrival at the small fishing village of Puerto Almaza, you will meet your hosts who will show you their method of artisan crab fishing and perhaps you will want to try your hand at catching your own lunch, as you take to the water in a small motorboat to help bring in the catch.

Next, the important part: lunch! Witness how the locals prepare this delicious local meal in its authentic setting, before savouring the extraordinary flavours of this traditional ‘Fueguian’ dish. This unique experience will fill not only your belly, but also give you an appreciation for how people here are forging an existence in harsh conditions at the End of the World.

There will be time to explore the peaceful solitude of the village and its surroundings on foot, before saying adios to your hosts and returning to Ushuaia in the early evening.

Meals: lunch (water and 2 alcoholic beverages included)

Accommodation: not included, can be added if required.

Day 3: Ushuaia & embarkation

The morning is your own for final preparations before Antarctica: perhaps picking up some End of the World souvenirs, visiting a museum or two, or just stretching your legs before crossing the Drake Passage. This afternoon you board your vessel and set sail towards the White Continent. As your adventure actually began two days ago when you arrived on Tierra del Fuego, you can tell your fellow Antarctic travellers all about it.

If arriving into Ushuaia in the afternoon of Day 1, you can choose to visit Tierra del Fuego National Park on the morning of Day 3, before boarding your Antarctic ship.
