Day 1: Arrive Ushuaia and settle into hotel
Upon your arrival into Ushuaia you will be met by a Swoop representative who will take you to your centrally-located hotel about 20 minutes from the airport, where you will be able to check-in to your room. Most people arrive in the afternoon after a long day’s travel, so we have left the afternoon free for your exploration. You may want to check out one of the many interesting museums in town, or take a scenic walk around the bay to stretch your legs and take in the views of the mountains you’ll be exploring tomorrow. There are many great dining options in the city where you might want to try king-crab, the local speciality! Your guide will contact you to confirm tomorrow morning’s arrangements. You will be expected to carry your tent, personal equipment and some food, but your guide will confirm this with you. You can choose to have a porter, at extra cost, if you wish.
Day 2: Start your hike along the Rio Chico
After breakfast at your hotel, your guide will pick you up and take you by vehicle about 20 minutes to the trail-head of the Rio Chico Valley. Here you will begin trekking with your guide, as the trail leads you gently uphill. You will pass small streams and waterfalls as well as peat bogs and fascinating beaver dams, as you gradually immerse yourself in the wilderness of Tierra del Fuego. This morning you will hike about 7km, and set up your basecamp, from which you can take different viewpoint walks in the afternoon, depending on your desire and the weather conditions. Your guide will provide you with the best options. In the evening, your guide will cook up some fantastic camp tukker!
Accommodation: Basecamp tent
Meal: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Day 3: Wilderness hike discovering remote mountain lagoons
After a camp breakfast you’ll set off on a circular hike of approximately 7km in the Torres del Rio Chico Valley and adjacent ridges. The distance may not seem that much, but with the undulating rugged terrain and the possibly testing conditions it will be a hearty day’s trek. Incredible panoramic vistas, isolated glacial lagoons and mountain passes will be some of the many highlights of this day in this secluded part of Tierra del Fuego. Returning to the camp you will be glad to rest up and enjoy a second night under the stars with your companions and guide.
Accommodation: Basecamp tent
Meal: Breakfast, lunch & dinner
Day 4 - Morning viewpoint hike, return to Ushuaia
Again breakfast is taken at the camp, and then you will have a choice of morning hikes to different viewpoints. After lunch, and breaking camp, you’ll load your backpacks once more, and gently return towards Ushuaia, stopping off and admiring the pristine forest of Tierra del Fuego for the last time. In the afternoon you will be met by vehicle at the trail-head and return you to your hotel around 5 o’clock in the evening, saying goodbye to your guide. This evening is yours to relax and enjoy being back in the city, and reflecting on a great three days in the Patagonian backcountry.
Meal: Breakfast & lunch
Day 5 - Antarctic Voyage
Today you will take the morning to relax from an intense three days in the wilderness and repack your gear ready for embarkation early afternoon. Swoop will inform you of the specific timings and logistics for this process to ensure you have the maximum amount of time enjoy the creature comforts of the city, perhaps taking-in a quick museum visit or some last-minute shopping for souvenirs or outdoor gear, before setting sail to the white continent.
