Kayaking and having whales and seals swim right next to us.

Which of the following best describes your adventure?

Great holiday

On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend or colleague?

10 out of 10

Tell us about the wildlife

We saw a lot of humpbacks. The highlight was definitely seeing the whales from the kayaks (including a minke) as well as a large group of orcas that swam very close to the ship. We also saw a fin whale, which I understand is unusual.

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

We definitely preferred the kayaking to the Zodiacs even though it didn't cover as much territory. The hike on our last day through the Italian Valley was spectacular.

Tell us about the expedition team

Everyone was very friendly and fairly knowledgeable. Sophie and Ewan (who lead the kayaking) were great. We would have expected Mike (Expedition leader) to check in individually with families to make sure everything was good, but we didn't have any personal contact with him.

Something Else?

Only minor hiccup was that Latam had changed our flight from SCL to PUQ several months ago. The flight was updated on our itinerary, but the ship’s operator didn't have that updated info so they weren't at the airport when we arrived so we had to wait about 45 min. On the plus side, because of the weather, we got to the boat a day early so we had an entire extra day in Antarctica!

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

We were lucky with the weather and even though we had planned in flexibility in our travel it's easy to see how the travel logistics could get messed up. I highly recommend that anyone traveling arrive a day early. We heard through the team on the ship that there was someone who was planning on arriving the afternoon of what was supposed to be Day 1 but because we left a day early, he missed the flight to King George and therefore missed the entire trip!
