What was your most memorable moment?

The most memorable part was the trip up the Drygawlski Fiord from Larson Harbor on South Georgia Island. It was just above freezing and snowing but the water was so cold that the snow was not melting but collecting on the water. The raw beauty of the fiord was stunning especially with the dusting of snow. The geography of our location was expertly described by our leader Stephi which added to the amazement of the moment. We saw at least 6 and perhaps 7 Wendell seals with a couple swimming around our Zodiac as we cruised and floated. There were also some Fur seals to entertain us. The steep sides of the fiord, the glaciers and waterfalls made the whole trip magical.

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Wonderful part of the trip. Particularly enjoyed the day where we went around Spurt Island. All the Zodiac drivers gave us ample time for photography and were patient and excellent at fielding questions. There emphasis on safety was always apparent.

Tell us about the expedition team

Enjoyed all of the members of this team. Particularly Stephi, Jeff and Michael. My favorite lecture was Michael’s lecture on climate change. He brought up and explained a lot of issues of which I had no previous knowledge.

Tell us about the Island Sky

Exceeded my expectations. Amazing how stable the ship was in rough seas. Our cabin was comfortable. Our room attendent Romelyn kept our room spotless and was quite helpful. The food was good but sometimes the description was a bit misleading. A bit more seasoning would have been appreciated by ourselves but we understand that cooking for a large group means that you have to satisfy a variety of tastes. I would definitely choose the ship again.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

If you are concerned mostly about the experience of being in these places this is the type of cruise that you want. If you wish a ship with other amenities such as a movie theater, casino or spa this is not the trip for you. Love the small ship that can get into more places than a large one. The trip to South Georgia greatly added to the experience. Would not go to Antarctica again without going there as well.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

More knowledgeable about this wild and beautiful area.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Very well prepared and excited. If I had known how wonderful the trip would be I would have been more excited.
