My top Antarctic experiences
- A stench that became a scent. On my first landing the smell of the penguin colony made me question why anyone would want to come here, until a zodiac cruise among the icebergs, nature's very own art gallery, gave me absolute silence for the first time in my life and turned a stench into a scent, the magic potion of happiness.
- A love I did not know I had. Being in South Georgia, surrounded by a sea of king penguins, then seeing the elephant seal pups, I do not know if my heart had ever felt that kind of love before. I remember telling my friend that if I was living my last few breaths, I had lived a great life.
- Fifty orcas and a symphony of sound. Out on a zodiac cruise, I once saw a minke whale right by our side, and the next moment it was gone. That disappointment lasted only a few sad seconds before we were surrounded by a pod of fifty orcas. A symphony of sound, a sight of synchronised swimmers, playful, curious, the perfect hosts.
- The gift that keeps on giving. Antarctica changes the way you explore and discover. It is an emotion, and an opportunity. It made me curious about my own daily choices: my use of plastics, animals kept in captivity, sustainability, animal welfare, climate positive moves.
