Life before Swoop

Birding in Tierra del Fuego

My journey into travel started early. I grew up exploring Chile from north to south, often camping, trekking, and learning directly from the landscapes around me. In 2010, I travelled to Torres del Paine for the first time and, like many people, fell completely in love. What was meant to be a short visit turned into eight years of guiding naturalist, birding, and kayaking tours across Patagonia, leading groups through some of the most remote and awe-inspiring places on the continent. This region isn't just a destination to me; it is the doorstep to Antarctica and a masterclass in wilderness survival and naturalist beauty.

I later spent nine years living in the UK, which became a second home to me. During that time, I continued working in travel while raising my family and deepening my understanding of British culture and how UK travellers experience wild, unfamiliar landscapes. When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me outdoors camping, trekking, or kayaking or perhaps tending my garden and making things by hand, from leather shoes to plant-based remedies inspired by Patagonia’s flora.

Why I love travelling

Travelling reminds me how small we are, and how deeply connected we are to the Earth. Being in vast, wild places strips life back to what truly matters and creates space for clarity, presence, and wonder.

I love how travel challenges us. Stepping into unfamiliar landscapes and climates invites humility, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

After years of guiding, I’ve seen how powerful shared journeys can be. Strangers become communities, and some of the most meaningful conversations happen in the most remote places.

I’m especially drawn to cold, remote destinations, where nature sets the pace and humans must slow down, adapt, and listen. One of my most transformative experiences was visiting Torres del Paine in winter, having the park almost to myself and walking through silent, snow-covered trails.

For me, travel isn’t about ticking places off a list. It’s about connection, to place, to people, and to a perspective that reshapes how we move through the world.
