Tell us about Zodiac excursions
This is the first time we have done Zodiac excursions. The expedition team was very mindful of the weather; took utmost care in coaching and assisting us (on and off the zodiac); very modern fleet; got a close up view of wild life (whales, seals and penguins) which was amazing. Great care was taken with bio-security procedures; the muckboots and safety jackets were excellent. Overall, a beyond expectations experience.
Tell us about the expedition team
Brilliant! They worked great as a team; very friendly; covered a wide variety of subjects - and we all learnt a lot; and were most concerned about our safety. They were all passionate and knowledgeable in their areas of work. it was a delight to be with them!
Tell us about the SH Minerva
Cabin, food , crew and the ship met/ exceeded expectations. A small size ship (as in, contained number of guests) helped a lot. we had the opportunity to interact with their Chef, tour the bridge; were pleasantly surprised with a very caring doctor; excellent amenities; sumptuous food (wide variety) - with the ability to provide some specific dishes based on our request. The crew waiting on us was incredible - they got to know each of our preferences and would always take our requests with a smile. While there was some shake on the Drake on the second day of our travel, the ship stayed in good balance.
Something Else?
The parka and jacket quality was outstanding. We would have liked better quality of the water proof bags and water bottles. Lastly, this tour was an all inclusive cruise (including gratuities) . However, we did get polite envelopes and an auction to serve as a tip - this should have been avoided to make the trip unblemished. Some suggestions for Swoop - Last mile detail : 1. While we were given the name of the agency acting on behalf of SH in Buenos Aires, an email hand-off would have made it much more seamless. The staff at Casa Lucia did not know Swan Hellenic and finally recognized the agency's name. 2. Please consider adding Gold Internet coverage with your pricing ( we realized it from some other passengers who paid $ 8,000 for the cruise and had the Internet included). All things considered, this was a terrific experience and we are grateful to the entire team
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Small sized expedition ships are a way to go. It is a very personalized affair. Buenos Aires was a very pleasant surprise and we loved it. I would encourage fellow passengers to include 4-5 days for Buenos Aires (and more if they want to Iguaza falls and Patagonia). Emphasize that SH Minerva as a self services launderette and they can actually travel light Invest in a good pair of gloves, water proof pants; head gear and thick sun glasses we also heard from several passengers that the prescription patches from the US(for sea-sickness) actually caused a lot of side effects. They may want to choose more carefully
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
The world is way more beautiful than I/we thought. We as a family will stop using Krill products. That is certainly a huge change in perspective
