Tell us about the expedition team

Outstanding group for our voyage. Each one had expertise they shared on board with their lectures. Great science support with detailed info. Marcello's knowledge and collection of historical information was superb! Great guy and very helpful... Ali's background lectures on her time in the Falklands and on South Georgia were very informative and really helped us understand the nature of living in each place. A major plus for our trip. Karoline's lecture about remote living in Svalbard was fascinating and a major plus. Very unique insight we would never have heard otherwise. Charlotte always seemed to be at the right place to lend a hand, or provide useful insight on things we were looking at or looking for.... Mattais was too quiet, but was constantly observing birds, and very helpful if you spoke up...

Tell us about the Plancius

The ship was fine... The food service/dining room crews all seemed to do a great job. Food was fine. Although there isn't really room, the ability to set up multiple desk positions in a cabin would be helpful when both of us were trying to upload/screen/process images.

Were Swoop right to recommend Oceanwide Expeditions?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Sometimes it was a challenge, but usually as a result of changing conditions while on shore. The cruises during calm conditions were a definite plus... As well as cruises in calmer water when it was too rough to land. The evening iceberg cruise was the most enjoyable. The total immersion splashing during rough return conditions was perhaps the most memorable.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

DO THE EQUIPMENT RENTAL. The pants and waterproof backpack were trip savers. Perhaps the pants are available at fisherman's supply houses or direct from Helly Hanson, but we don't see any equivalent available in sports equipment stores in the US Pacific Northwest. And, although I have multiple dry bags from kayak camping expeditions, the rental size was perfect for camera protection. On the Plancius, DON'T OVERPACK by taking a lot of extra clothes. Just use the laundry. It is a great service, reasonably priced, and you get same day turnaround... If you get wet on landing our during a Zodiac ride, just send the clothes to the laundry. And don't pack enough clothes for three weeks. Just use the laundry. Binoculars are helpful. You can see a lot of birds and marine mammals that are not really in photography range. And, it provides closeups of geology and ice features. If you don't like meds such as scopolamine or Dramamine for motion sickness, think about getting a Relief Band motion sickness wristband. It works (at least for me). You may well need something for the extended "at sea'" days, expecially South Georgia to Antarctica, and crossing the Drake Passage.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Yes. South Georgia, and the Antarctic, are a long way from anywhere. And, Industrial squid fishing. While flying back north (USH TO Buenos Aires) I saw two arrays of squid fishing boats at dusk, with the their lights on. It was one thing to see the boats in the Stanley harbor. It was anther thing to see an array of 18 boats at one spot, and about a dozen at another spot, getting set up for a night of squid jigging. Can't help bur wonder how much those fisheries take out of the region.... ... that might otherwise go to wildlife...

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?
