What was your most memorable moment?

We had 9 excursions in 5 days, 7 landings and 2 zodiacs. One of those zodiacs was supposed to be a landing but the tide wouldn’t allow us go ashore, so we did zodiacs instead at Heroina Island. I had lowered my expectations a bit since it was a plan B, but it was probably my favorite excursion of the trip! There were thousands of penguins all over the rocky island, some chilling, and many diving into the water in what seemed like swarms. We kept circling all of the action with dramatic waves crashing against the rocks as the penguins jumped with us safely and calmly very close by in the zodiac boat. Then a leopard seal came up right next to the boat and stuck his head up just to see what was going on, a little before we saw two whales surfacing side by side slightly in the distance. It was everything I could have hoped for and more.

Were Swoop right to recommend Antarctica 21?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Yes. Already detailed in a previous question.

Tell us about the expedition team

Knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and fun.

Tell us about the Magellan Explorer

Beautiful ship. I have not been on a small expedition ship before, only major cruise lines. This lacked things that a giant ship had, but it didn’t need any of them. Antarctica itself was the wow factor. But the ship was still modern and clean in all the right ways.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Go!! I don’t think I was aware that there is a small chance you could get delayed by multiple days and an even smaller chance it can be cancelled completely due to the weather. That didn’t happen to us, but I don’t remember even knowing that in the first place, so it’s something I’ll tell people who I recommend this to. Maybe I didn’t know because I booked it so last minute.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

I was worried to do a solo trip. I now will look for other small group experiences like this cruise to do it again in a heartbeat. My time in Patagonia was not as good in that regard because I was with a new group of 3-5 every day and they were all much older than me. I didn’t mind it, but that one felt more isolating. The cruise was not isolating at all, I made new friends because of it.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

The only thing I can even think of, is at each airport when I’d land, I was just hoping that the prearranged travel would actually be there It always was, so there really was no issue. But maybe an email or text from someone the night before or morning of that someone will actually be there to mee you would be nice.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Great, especially considering I planned it only a month before. The amount of info on your site was extremely helpful.
