I would change nothing

Tell us about the expedition team

Pipa was an incredible leader and here style created an unbelievably positive and can do attitude across the full team. The Captain and his crew were so obliging and so accommodating. The house keeping and catering team were so professional and warm and friendly A special word for Ursula from Switzerland. She made our trip sometime really special. She is so knowledgeable

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

If you go with Swoop and the Hondius you will never regret it. Trip of a lifetime.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Yes, we are very small in the greater scheme of things but collectively we humans have the ability to effect huge change for good or for harm to our natural world.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

You need to address the issue of mountaineering. What you provide would be much better classified as trekking. It is a pity to raise true mountaineer’s expectations and then to guide them up a modest trek, harness them into a line with guests who are not mountaineers, put snow shoes on them (most who attend just use muck boots), and then call it mountaineering. It’s not mountaineering, it’s a guided trek. And quite a modest trek at that. Many guests paid for or brought with them (myself included) expensive and very heavy boots. We dragged them across the world and we either did not need them or were not given the opportunity to use them. With the exception of ice climbing (which many of us were not allowed to participate in because we wanted to do a mountain walk) there was absolutely no need for these heavy boots. There is no need for Swoop to ‘over play’ this activity, it’s not mountaineering, it’s an Antarctic trek across spectacular glaciers and ice covered hills and terrain. This is what this is, and this is what it should be sold as. As such it is an absolutely amazing activity- you don’t need to over sell it….. Nobody would have liked to do an ice climb more than me, but I also wanted to climb a mountain, I asked could I do both but was told I could only do one. Having chosen the mountain, I later discovered I did not need the 4kg boots I had shipped across the globe.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Very well prepared
