Tell us about Zodiac excursions

The Zodiac cruises were a surprise. Physical landings are NOT always the best way to view wildlife in certain areas. The mobility of the Zodiac often provides a wider range of options for both viewing and photography. For example, if whales are spotted in an area, the Zodiacs will more likely provide a closer encounter than viewing from land. Imagine the surprise when a humpback whale unexpectedly surfaces right next to you. Not only do you capture the visuals but also the unique sounds of the whales when up that close. Also, for capturing images of penguins and other wildlife in sheer rocky areas, the only way to capture great images from a low angle are from the Zodiacs. Some of my best images of macaroni penguins came from a Zodiac in an area inaccessible by foot. The Zodiacs are extremely stable and I always felt safe.

Tell us about the expedition team

The expedition team were all friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed Danny’s lectures the most as I am a history buff. He also has a great sense of humor.

Tell us about the Seaventure

The Seaventure was first class with an impressive crew and hotel staff. From the guys helping you on to the Zodiacs to the cabin stewards, virtually everything was five star. The food was gourmet and irresistible!

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

The air is VERY dry there so be prepared with lotions to help. Also, since the air is so dry, you can handwash even a cotton sweatshirt and it will dry overnight! Wool socks, undergarments etc. dry even quicker. If I had it to do over, I would pack less clothes. Stick with merino wool and garments such as smart wool if your skin can tolerate it.
