Santiago accommodation: FAQs
-
Where should I stay in Santiago?
Santiago’s tourist districts are spread across a variety of charming neighbourhoods. The central Lastarria district is one of the city’s historic centres and within easy walking distance of the Plaza de Armas and lively Bellavista area. Providencia and Vitacura, two elegant residential neighbourhoods we also recommend, are home to high-end shops and restaurants.
-
How long should I stay in the city?
Santiago and its surroundings offer a wealth of exciting experiences. Chile's Central Valley wine region is a short drive from the city, with some vineyards reachable on a half-day visit. A one- or two-night stay provides time to see the city highlights and take a hiking trip in the Andes or immerse yourself in the local culinary culture. A three-night break allows you to explore Santiago and the coastal city of Valparaíso's with its charming cobbled streets and vibrant murals.
-
Is it easy to get around Santiago?
Santiago has an efficient metro system, offering a sustainable way to get around the city. If you’d prefer to travel by taxi, you can easily spot them in the street by their black paint and yellow roofs. You can hail a taxi as it passes by or request the hotel reception to call one for you. Alternatively, ride hailing services such as Uber are available and widely used throughout the city.
-
What is the standard of hotels in Santiago?
You can expect most hotels to be of the standard you’d expect in a comparable city back home, with one notable exception: the rating. A superior or 4* hotel in Chile is likely to be slightly more ‘basic’ than its American or European equivalent. We have selected hotels where this mismatch is not significant.
-
Will staff speak English?
Most customer-facing staff will speak some English, but fluency isn’t guaranteed. In premium hotels, many staff members have strong language skills, and English is fairly common in Santiago. However, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in making interactions smoother and more enjoyable.
-
Do I need to pay a tourist tax or VAT?
International visitors to Santiago must pay a daily tourist tax for their stay but are exempt from VAT on accommodation. We factor these important details into our pricing.
