When to see wildlife on the Antarctic Peninsula

Learn about Antarctica's wonderful wildlife

Penguins

You can find a variety of penguin species nesting in colonies throughout the Antarctic Peninsula. Most nest high up on the rocks, away from any potential dangers and spend their days waddling back and forth from the sea to bring their young fish along 'penguin highways'.

Whales

Antarctica is the perfect place for close encounters with whales, and it's possible to spot up to eight whale species in Antarctica. However, humpbacks and minke whales are by far the most sighted. The use of small zodiac boats carrying around eight people means you'll be able to explore the many bays and inlets of the Peninsula and encounter whales up close. Watching them dip and dive into the water is a truly humbling and unforgettable experience.

Seals

Seals are found in their thousands throughout Antarctica, breeding on the beaches and rocks or on the pack ice, depending on their species. A variety of seal species live on the Peninsula, so the likelihood of seeing these animals in Antarctica is high. Watch out for them hauled out on icebergs snoozing – and keep your eyes peeled, as curious seals may even approach your zodiac if you're lucky!
