About Me

Life before Swoop

Growing up in the countryside of South Africa, I loved the wide open spaces and yearned to explore the rest of the world. After managing a business in my 20s, a life at sea beckoned. As a crew member I was able to combine my passion for travel and photography; I sailed extensively for 15 years, visiting over 60 countries. A move back to “land” followed when I settled down in Chile and began working with expedition cruises to Antarctica, helping customers plan once-in-a-lifetime trips to the White Continent.

My Antarctic Experience

My first journey to Antarctica involved flying out across the Drake Passage to join my expedition ship at King George Island, from where we set off on our expedition. My senses were overwhelmed by the vast beauty of the white landscapes; the deep hues of blue and the energy from the huge numbers of penguins and other wildlife left an indelible mark on my soul. For me, Antarctica was a life-changing moment, a profound connection between myself and Mother Nature.

Why I love Antarctica

I am endlessly inspired by the towering icebergs, the vast glaciers and the untouched wilderness that seems to stretch away in every direction. Viewing this world through a camera lens, I am particularly fond of the penguin: the delightful ambassadors of Antarctica. Watching a bustling penguin colony, with their comical waddles, adorable antics and raucous calls is a truly magical experience. To stand alongside thousands of these charismatic creatures, observing their social dynamics and witnessing their unwavering resilience in the face of harsh conditions, is a humbling reminder of the tenacity of life in even the most unforgiving environments. An expedition to Antarctica can be a moment of self-reflection and often it has a major impact on people's life.

Day to day at Swoop

I love to help Swoop customers plan and arrange trips to the White Continent; it is such a joy to share my enthusiasm and expert knowledge of Antarctica and to help in choosing the right type of expedition and ship. I strive to foster a sense of stewardship and reverence for Antarctica, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

10/10 - The fact that Otto responded within 12 hours to my very random, very last-minute, and very particular request to book our trip to Antarctica only six weeks prior to the sail date, and helped us arrange our daughter's Bat Mitzvah on the continent... made this life-changing trip possible.
