Tell us about the expedition team

Expedition team members were uniformly friendly, approachable, helpful, and full of knowledge related to what we were seeing or could see.

Tell us about the Magellan Explorer

I have been on (much larger) cruise ships before, so I did have some general idea of how being onboard would be. My experience with Magellan Explorer was a step up from my previous experiences. Partly this was due to the small size of the ship, but even taking this into account, I found staff extremely friendly and helpful throughout the voyage. In addition, I found the food excellent, with great variety and ample portions.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Temper your expectations. Don't think every day is going to be filled with gorgeous sunshine, as photos tend to suggest. If you concentrate on the incredible landscape and fantastic wildlife, you will have an unforgettable adventure even if the weather is not the best.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Antarctica is even more remote and wild than I had imagined.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

The only quibble I had with the trip and the instructions we were given may have more to do with Antarctica 21 that Swoop. It's this. We were told (repeatedly and with emphasis) that we needed to be at our hotel in Punta Arenas by 2 pm the day before departure in order to participate in a mandatory orientation meeting. Missing the 2 pm time of the meeting, we were told, would result in us being listed as no-shows and the trip being cancelled. When we arrived at the hotel well before 2 pm, we were told that the orientation meeting was at 5 pm. Had we known that, we could have had a much more leisurely departure from Patagonia Camp, which is where we were staying the night before.
