What was your most memorable moment?

So many. If we had to pick one, it was standing on Antarctica and looking out on endless snow fields in one direction and iceberg graveyards in the other direction.

Were Swoop right to recommend Aurora Expeditions?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Most memorable was Paradise Harbor. But Fort Point was also memorable - we couldn’t land because there were so many fur seals on the beach. The Zodiac teams were really good. Always safety first. Good drivers and many of the drivers could offer us insights on what we were seeing.

Tell us about the expedition team

The team was terrific. There are team members with various specialities, and there is obviously turnover so some staff are better informed on some issues than others. We enjoyed the diversity of the team, both their geographic diversity and their various scientific backgrounds. Glad we got to spend some time with most of the team at one time or another.

Tell us about the Greg Mortimer

The ship was everything we could expect. The cabin, the food, the housekeeping staff, the restaurant staff. Only good things to say about all of them. We would definite choose the Greg Mortimer or the Sylvia Earle if we ever went again.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Follow the instructions that come along with your itinerary and you almost can’t go wrong. Bring binoculars. And while the iPhone camera is good for some things, there are some photos you wil only appreciate if you have some better zoom features.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Patagonia (on both sides of the border) and Antarctica have both been very humbling experiences. The isolation, vastness and barrenness of Antarctica puts our importance in life in a very different light. Even the isolation of Patagonia (3 hour drive from El Calafate to El Chalten and you pass maybe three ranches and not much else), just made us feel more appreciative of the vastness of the region and the strength of the indigenous people.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

Our only issue was that due to turnover in Awoop staff we Sometimes had challenges finding out where our itinerary stood and who to talk to to straighten things out.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Very.
