<\/b>If I had collected a pound for every time a conversation about Antarctica had begun with \u2018We don\u2019t normally go cruising\u2019, my wife would be truly happy. In fact, it\u2019s such a common prelude that setting the record straight feels distinctly overdue. So this is my attempt to, and perhaps along the way to debunk a few pre-set ideas.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it’s widely acknowledged that a ship still offers the best means of access to Antarctica, this <\/span>doesn\u2019t <\/span><\/i>automatically mean that you\u2019re going \u2018cruising\u2019, a word which for many instantaneously conjures up (with a shudder) thoughts of deck quoits, cocktail parties, evening floor shows and sharing your holiday with hundreds of others. For the traditional world of \u2018cruising\u2019 – in the Mediterranean, Caribbean or on The Nile – couldn\u2019t be a more different beast from an \u2018expeditionary voyage\u2019 to Antarctica, which is what Swoop Antarctica specialise in. In fact they\u2019re hardly related – more like second cousins, twice removed.<\/span><\/p>\n

So what is an expeditionary voyage, if not a cruise? <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In short, it’s the very antithesis of a traditional cruise: It’s an <\/span>active<\/b>, <\/span>adventurous<\/b> and <\/span>educational <\/b>undertaking by<\/span> small ship<\/b> into <\/span>remote regions<\/b> with a <\/span>flexible schedule<\/b> to experience that region at <\/span>first hand<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
